If you were anywhere near Albany New York yesterday then you likely heard the news: The Honest Weight Food Co-Op is open. Did you go? Did you go? That was the big question for everyone in the newsroom yesterday! It was a big exciting event... because it is located right across the street from our studios on Watervliet Avenue Extension.
What makes this place different from the rest? They are a member owned and operated business. Meaning you can own a piece of the business for $100. You can also get a discount on a sliding scale between 2 and 24% depending on your participation in the business. 5% of annual profits go to a broad range of local causes and organizations and the company supports local farmers and producers.
You will see a lot of home grown foods and products and there are many free or minimal fee classes to learn everything from how to cook to how to become more self sustaining. There is indoor and outdoor seating and a lot of new products to check out! I recommend the raspberry scones!
After years of looking across the street at a rundown building. Then looking at that same rundown building brightly painted with some bright flowers (wonder who's idea that was), there is new life on that piece of land.
As with every business- this one attracts its die hard clientele. At one count there were 3 Prius in the parking lot! I saw a lot of bikes and where were all these people walking from? It used to be so boring on our corner! But this is really a place for everyone.
Now it's an exciting addition to the neighborhood! To learn more about the Honest Weight Food Co-Op click HERE.
