God Intended Rape?

Looks like a lot of people are saying this morning another politician may have stuck his foot in his mouth.

Republican candidate Richard Mourdock- running as a  Libertarian candidate for one of Indiana's U.S. Senate seats- was asked his thoughts about pregnancies that result in cases of rape in a debate. He said last night "I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize life is that gift from God," Mourdock said. "And I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen."

Mourdock tried to clarify his comments in a news conference following the debate. He said he had intended to say that "God creates life," and that any interpretation of his comments to mean God "pre-ordained rape" were "sick" and "twisted."

I'm pretty sure the national news outlets will be having a field day covering this one. What do you think? Do you think he meant what he said or just didn't articulate his point effectively?
