Interpreter Steals The Show

I love that someone else picked up on this! Our newsroom was a buzz with activity with covering Hurricane Sandy. One thing, or should I say person, who stopped us in our tracks was Lydia Callis, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Sign Language Interpreter!

I can't put it any better than a Yahoo reporter put it: While the mayor spoke in his trademark businesslike monotone and stiff, stilted Spanish, Callis brought his words to life, adding expression and emotion as her fingers and hands flew to translate each briefing into American Sign Language.

She was mesmerizing and you really couldn't take your eyes off of her as she spoke. Apparently the Mayor knows she was a hit because in a subsequent news conference he started off thanking her and her legions of followers!
